NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION

Neuropsychological testing involves the comprehensive evaluation of cognitive processes, developmental, biological, and environmental factors to develop an understanding of brain functioning and to better understand how these factors may be contributing to presenting symptoms and/or behaviors. Neuropsychological testing assesses social skills development, memory, attention, concentration, executive functioning, cognitive flexibility, sensory development/integration, language, reading, quantitative reasoning, auditory and visual processing.

Culturally Informed Neuropsychological Evaluation involves the consideration of culture, ethnicity, race, social-economic status, and language development in the context of bilingualism in neuropsychological assessment. Comprehensive assessment is essential in achieving diagnostic clarity and in avoiding misdiagnosing, particularly with children, given many disorders may present with overlapping symptoms. In other words, several disorders share many of the same symptoms which, without proper evaluation, may result in an inaccurate diagnosis.

THE EVALUATION PROCESS

Testing is initiated by first completing a clinical interview and reviewing the developmental history form completed prior to the appointment. While the duration of this appointment may vary by case, clinical interview appointments are typically a one-hour appointment. This is followed by a second appointment in which the actual testing is completed usually within one, four-hour appointment. Of note, this can also vary depending on the case and at times be completed over several days. After testing, scoring, interpretation, and report writing occur (about a 5-6 hour process). There is a turnaround time of approximately two to three weeks on reports. After the report is completed, you will have a feedback session in which Dr. Gray explains the results and reviews recommendations for treatment.

PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION

Psychological testing can be helpful in achieving diagnostic clarify, also referred to differential diagnosis. It can be used to rule out or confirm diagnosis and to assess behavior, personality traits, mood, emotional functioning, and cognitive processes (IQ). The evaluation process is similar to neuropsychological evaluation, but may be less comprehensive and time consuming. Unlike neuropsycological evaluation, referrals for psychological testing do not usually involve factors such as genetic conditions, TBI, developmental problems, or other organic conditions that may impact psychological functioning.

PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL EVALUATION

Psychoeducational evaluations involve the assessment of both intellectual functioning and academic achievement. Referral questions for these evaluations explore learning disorders, dyslexia, phonological processing problems, specific learning disorders in reading, reading comprehension, in addition to learning, memory, and attentional functioning.

HARDSHIP EVALUATION

Family members, US Citizens (USC) or Legal Permanent Residents (LPR) of individuals facing deportation can experience significant psychological distress and hardship. A hardship evaluation can assist in assessing the current and potential hardship of a USC or LPR. These evaluations are not considered medically necessary, and as such, are not covered by insurance.
